![]() ![]() Press and hold the gas pedal for at least five seconds.Defective Throttle Position Sensor (TPS).A faulty gas pedal (also known as travel sensor, gas accelerator, pedal position sensor) may develop similar symptoms as a bad throttle position sensor. Mercedes-Benz utilizes a drive-by-wire system. ![]() Replacing it takes less than 10 min and doesn’t require any special tools other than a 10mm socket and a screwdriver. On models such as E-Class W210 and W208, the Throttle Position Sensor is mounted near the front left strut, on the front of the brake fluid reservoir. Mercedes Throttle Position SensorĪnother weak point is the throttle position sensor. Check out these companies that offer Mercedes throttle body repair service (eBay link). Mercedes throttle bodies made by Bosch and VDO may fail. Here is a close up picture of a Mercedes throttle body. When there are throttle body malfunctions the wrong amount of air enters into the engine causing problems with air/fuel mixture ratio. The throttle body is where the throttle valve is mounted and is what control the amount of air that enters the combustion chamber. In ost cases, the issue is caused by either a defective pedal position sensor or a bad throttle position sensor. Turn off the engine and restarting it usually fix the problem. If you press the gas pedal to the floor or try to accelerate quickly or floor it, the engine stops responding, RPMs drop and it may even go into limp mode. Symptoms of defective Mercedes throttle body or throttle position sensor include:Ī common problem that you may notice is that the car drives fine under normal acceleration. And a code set during high or part load can be a fuelling issue or an erroneous sensor signal.Mercedes-Benz throttle body or throttle position sensor found on C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, CLK-Class, SLK-Class may fail causing idle issues, no idle or poor acceleration. Normally a code set during idle or light load is relating to an air leak. If a load or condition is included in the fault code this can be an advantage during diagnosis. The fuel trim is monitored under various loads and conditions. This fault can be stored due to a faulty coolant temperature sensor, excessively high fuel pressure or a faulty fuel injector. The ECM will decrease the injection duration to counteract the excessively rich mixture. Under this condition the fuel trim data will display a negative value. The fuel trim data can be displayed as a percentage, either positive or negative. ![]() The pre-catalyst exhaust gas oxygen sensor is the primary component used for calculating the fuel trim once the system enters closed loop control. However when a fault causes the fuel trim to exceed a predetermined level the malfunction indication light is illuminated and a limited operating strategy is employed. This is achieved by trimming the fuel mixture to the required amount to cater for slight anomalies during normal operating conditions. For correct operation of the catalytic converter the ECM is required to keep the air fuel ratio (AFR) at approximately lambda 1, this equates to an AFR of 14.7:1 by mass. This fault code is stored in the Engine Control Module ( ECM) when the ECM is no longer capable of controlling the air fuel ratio. ![]()
